Functional neurology
Functional Neurology evaluates the Central Nervous System. It looks at imbalances in our function by assessing how we respond to our environment and it’s changing variables. It can help assess and rehabilitate how our “neuronal networks” communicate with each other helping with things like balance, eye distortions, depth perception, processing our inner and outer environment, learning, focus and so much more.
What Is Functional Neurology?
Functional Neurology looks at how neuronal networks within the central nervous system communicate with one another and how these networks respond to environmental input.
Rather than focusing only on structural damage or disease, Functional Neurology examines how well the brain is functioning and how effectively it processes information from the body and the environment. From this information, the doctors can offer exercises and treatment to support rebalancing and healing of the nervous system.
How Functional Neurology Works
We examine the brain by examining the body- we look at how asymmetries observed are related to dysfunction in the brain that relate to the symptoms our patients experience. These observations include movement patterns, reflexes, eye movements, posture, and more.
What to Expect During Functional Neurology
During your evaluation, your practitioner will perform a series of neurological and functional assessments designed to evaluate how your brain and nervous system are communicating with the body.
Comprehensive examination and treatment of the including the following:
Vital Signs
Eye Movements
Cranial Nerves
Pathological, Musculoskeletal, and Primitive Reflexes
Sensory and Motor Function
Vestibular System
Cerebellum and Cortex of the Brain
Potential Benefits of Functional Neurology
Functional Neurology may help support:
Appropriate Integration of Stimuli
Improvement in neurological based symptoms
Improvement in sensory and motor function
Compressive understanding of neuronal networks increasing probability of an expedited recovery process from traumatic brain injury.
Improvements in executive functioning skills
Because the brain has the ability to adapt and reorganize through neuroplasticity, targeted neurological stimulation can help strengthen underperforming pathways.
Who May Benefit From Functional Neurology
Functional Neurology may be helpful for individuals who:
Peripheral Neuropathy
Brain injury (including but not limited to concussion, stroke, toxic exposure)
Eye movement impairments
Balance and proprioception issues
Autonomic Imbalances or disorders
Functional Neurological Disorders
Hypersensitivities
Focus issues
Functional movement impairments
